National Custodian Day is Oct. 2!
September 13, 2022
One of my hopes for The Custodian Project is to inspire individuals and organizations to recognize the custodians who care for their spaces. Whether it is saying hello, introducing yourself, giving a thank you note, treating them to a meal or gift card, or advocating for their requests as some examples.
As a proud daughter of UW custodians and a UW alumn, I will honor National Custodian Day by delivering a The Custodian Project t-shirt or hat, thank you note, and hot meal to ~230 UW Seattle campus custodians on Oct. 3-12. You can still donate a t-shirt or hat to a custodian. I am also looking for 200 handmade thank you cards. If you are interested in contributing thank you notes, please contact us for details.
I am currently fundraising for $3,000 for hot meals. Food is a wonderful way to show care and appreciation. If you are part of a UW school or department and your school or department would like to co-sponsor meals, please email me for details.
If you are an individual who would like to support these efforts, please see payment options below or here.

The Custodian Project Community Event Video + Merch Order Form
September 6, 2022
The Custodian Project Community Event was on August 28. You can watch a 6-minute video of the event created by Oscar Contender here: youtu.be/5NaT9t73l1Y
This was The Custodian Project's first in-person event to celebrate the important role custodial workers hold in keeping our communities safe and healthy. For me, it was most important for custodians like my mother to feel special, have fun, and enjoy an abundance of food, gifts, and dancing. We achieved this due to SO many supporters and lovely volunteers who made the event very special. It meant a lot to me and the custodians to see nearly 100 attendees who showed care for them and their work. As a custodian said, "Wow! They must care about custodians!" This is the type of visual appreciation and awareness I had always hoped for. We hope to have another community event next year!
In addition to t-shirts (only a handful left), the merch order form now includes hats, acrylic pins, and waterproof stickers. You can check it out here: forms.gle/eCDoBFyQg34AdSHr9
Thank you for being a part of this work that aims to appreciate, recognize, respect, and advocate for custodians in our communities.
Special thanks to:
@uwsph for sponsoring the delicious food made by @salimaspecialties
@columbiadist_wa for donating drinks
@uwsocialwork, @uwbridgescenter, @apalaseattle, and LELO for sponsorships
@djkb0ogie + @djon_mars for playing music that brought so much joy to custodians that they made a dance floor
@othellouwcommons for providing the space for us to gather in celebration
@seattleaudubon for lending me their button maker + supplies!
Thank you for contributing gifts for custodian guests:
@cdhoerster - @friendlyhmongfarms - @hoodfamousbakeshop - @metmarket - @madisonparkbakery
Thank you for contributing to raffle prizes:
@arestingplace.sea - @boonboonacoffee - @cafeavole - @coffeeholichouse - @hello.em_coffee - @honeyberrystudios - @jodytran - @lo.ceramics - @momentumclimbingseattle - @thepowerplant.seattle - @thestationcoffeeshop - @superjocknjill - @winglukemuseum - breakfast basket from a generous donor!

I am excited to share The Custodian Project's new t-shirt designed by The MAP'D Project and printed by Midnight Supply Company. The design is of my mom's cart that she inherited from a good friend over 25 years ago. I asked her to model with me.

The Custodian Project Community Event: 8/28 @ 1-4pm, Othello-UW Commons
August 1, 2022
Hello and happy August! I hope you are staying as cool as can be.
You are invited to a community event on Sunday, August 28 at 1-4pm at the Othello-UW Commons (4200 S Othello St, Seattle, WA 98118). There will be free food and drinks, merch for sale, raffle prizes, and a custodian photography exhibit. Because the exhibit has only been on the UW campus, I wanted to bring it to the community. I hope we can celebrate the journey of the project, but most importantly, the critical role custodians play in our communities. This is an open invitation, so please feel free to invite others! Please RSVP here.

I am in the process of changing the project's name to The Custodian Project. The University of Washington is tied to my parents' work as custodians and my higher education. However, the intent is for people to acknowledge and respect custodians everywhere. I hope this more general project name will resonate with people outside of the UW.
I am celebrating this new project name with a design inspired by my mother's cart created by The MAP'D Project and logo created by a generous volunteer. You will start to see this around the project's social media channels and website (www.thecustodianproject.com).
Merch coming real soon. I hope to see you on August 28th!

Awards of Excellence + KING 5 Story
June 21, 2022
Happy summer solstice! As we ease into summer, I wanted to share a couple of updates.
I am so proud of my mother for receiving the Together We Will Award at the UW Awards of Excellence ceremony on Thursday, June 9. (See photo attached!) She has dedicated over 33 years to cleaning UW buildings. This is just one of many ways we can honor custodians for their work and important role in our communities. She shared a few memorable moments in a recent interview.

My mother and I were featured on KING 5's New Day yesterday. You can see the under 4-minute piece here.
People often ask me: But what can I do to support custodians? It starts with building a genuine relationship. Each custodian's experience is unique and there is no single solution. By getting to know the individual over time, you might learn what would be most supportive.
A few things are happening including the creation of a logo and design, AND lovely merch to publicly show your solidarity with custodial workers! Stay tuned.
